Hay Festival

The Hay Festival of Literature & Arts is an annual literature festival held in Hay-on-Wye for ten days from May to June. Devised by Norman and Peter Florence in 1988, the festival was described by Bill Clinton in 2001 as "The Woodstock of the mind". Since its inception, the festival was held at a variety of venues around Hay, including the local Primary School, until 2005 when it moved to a central location just outside of the town. The festival has expanded in recent years and now includes musical performances and film previews. A children's festival, "Hay Fever", runs alongside the main festival.

Brecon Jazz

Brecon Jazz Festival is a music festival held on an annual basis in the rural surroundings of Brecon. Normally staged in early August, it plays host to a range of jazz musicians who travel from across the world to take part and to many visiting tourists who are attracted by the music, the social scene and the other leisure opportunities on offer in and around the Brecon Beacons. Since June 2009 it is now produced by the Hay Festival and funded by Arts Council of Wales. 2010 was described as "... Brecon feels like the best jazz weekend you can have outside London".

The Royal Welsh Show

This major event is nothing short of the biggest agricultural show in Europe. The sleepy market town of Builth Wells on the banks of the River Wye is bursting with visitors during show week and the car parks around the permanent showground run a park-and-ride service to move the crowds. Livestock competitions are the big attraction and there are many categories including hunters, shires and agricultural heavy horses, beef and dairy cattle, sheep, sheep shearing and a whole host of other farming activities. There are also ample opportunities for shopping at the numerous trade stands, and plenty of family entertainment.

Abergavenny Food festival

Abergavenny Food Festival and others

The region hosts several food festivals, the major player is Abergavenny. In 2010 it had 37,000 visitors in 6 venues with 200 stalls and 80 ticketed events. Cookery demonstrations performed by local chefs in the Market Hall provide a popular attraction every year at the Food Festival, with the informal easy-come, easy-go atmosphere appealing to a large audience. In Brecon the Food Festival fills the Brecon Market Hall and spills out into the town of Brecon - making it a popular and iconic event, a place where visitors can come and experience an extraordinary range of local produce and sample a true taste of Wales.
